<![CDATA[The Muskogee Phoenix: All Categories]]> (1)

JoAnn (Parker) Ogden, 80, of Oktaha, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2024. JoAnn was the favorite (only) child of Russell and Hazel (Wilson) Parker and was born in Charleston, Arkansas. Although Hazel wanted her daughter to begin life in Arkansas, Joann was a true Okie and lived in Oktaha, Oklahoma for most of her life. She met John Ogden in the 6th grade at Wainwright Elementary School. They were friends throughout childhood and married on December 7, 1962. JoAnn was a dedicated wife, supporting John through many business and leadership endeavors throughout their 61 years of marriage.JoAnn and John welcomed two children, Doug and Marla. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her family, particularly her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After her daughter-in-law suffered a tragic car accident, she took up the role of mother figure for her grandchildren. She cultivated a particularly close relationship with her grandson, Jace. She guided her grandchildren through many years of school and marriage. JoAnn was outspoken and often gave advice to an audience of eye rolls and pursed lips. However, her support never wavered, her love always endured, and her intentions were understood. She was the glue that held the family together. Her passing has broken our hearts and she will be sorely missed.JoAnn was a keen businesswoman, working at Commercial Bank until she and John acquired Ogden Insurance in 1976. The story goes that she didn't much care for insurance in those early days, but it didn't stop her from taking it on full force and becoming a highly respected woman in the business. She managed Ogden Insurance for 47 years, retiring in late 2023 to spend more time with John. Her retirement was cut short by a severe fall at home which led to a 6 month and 1 week hospital stay. JoAnn had grit, fighting to return home to John and her brand-new great-granddaughter, Amelia Joann. In her free time, JoAnn loved to read novels and watch Hallmark movies. Some of her favorite authors were Nora Roberts, Fern Michaels, Danielle Steele, Debbie Macomber, or John Grisham. Check out a book or watch a sappy Hallmark Christmas movie in her honor. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her in-laws, Buet and Ruth Ogden; her sister-in-law, Sandra Kaye Smalley; daughter-in-law, Stephanie (Breashears) Ogden; brother-in-law, Rev. Leo Guthrie; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Bowden) Ogden; nephew, Bart Guthrie; and niece, Amy Ogden.JoAnn is survived by son, Doug and Brenda Ogden of Oktaha; daughter, Marla and Rocky Mosley of Oktaha; grandsons, Jace and Grace Ogden of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Rocky Joe Mosley of Indiana, Daniel and Jennifer Mosley of Broken Arrow; granddaughters, Rachel and Trea Milne of Oktaha, and Caroline Lacie and Mike Hering of Port Lavaca, Texas; great-grandchildren, Jack and Amelia Ogden, Cinch Morris, Aiden, Logan, Adriel, McKynlee, and Brody Mosley, Addilyn and Jaxon Milne; aunt, Helen and Harley Jones; uncle, Donald and Loretta Wilson of Charleston, Arkansas; aunt, Shirley and Charles Scott of Kansas; and lifelong friend, Bonnie Boyer.JoAnn's life will be celebrated at 10AM, Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Muskogee First Assembly of God with Dr. Steve Rose officiating. Interment will follow at Middleton Chapel Cemetery in Oktaha. Pallbearers will be Jace, Robert and Keith Ogden, Trea Milne, Brett Guthrie, and Weston Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Ogden, Rocky Mosley, Ken Ogden, Mike Hering, Grady Reeves, Jim, Ross, Gerald, Steve and Mike Ogden. Funeral services are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory, 1830 N. York Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.cornerstoneofmuskogee.com

<![CDATA[The Muskogee Phoenix: All Categories]]> (10)

John L. Ogden was born July 12, 1944 in Boynton, Oklahoma and peacefully passed away at home in Oktaha, Oklahoma on July 24, 2024. John was the second child and oldest son of B.L. and Ruth (Pippin) Ogden. He was a proud graduate of Wainwright School and Connors State College. He married the love of his life Joann (Parker) Ogden on December 7, 1962. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and were madly in love through the very end of his life. Together they welcomed two children, Doug and Marla. John was a devoted husband and father. He was ornery, humorous, and never missed the opportunity to give someone a hard time or dub them with a nickname. A man who stuck to his family heritage, he was proud to ranch and raise a red Angus herd with his son, Doug. Through the years he enjoyed raising Haflinger horses and sharing the art of wagon-driving with his grandchildren. John's favorite role was arguably that of grandfather and great grandfather. Nothing lit up his face with immeasurable joy like the children in his life. He took his job of spoiling the kids quite seriously, happily irritating their parents by buying saddles, toys, and horses. About the only thing he didn't get to buy was a helicopter- and that's only because Grandma Joann said no. His grandchildren and great grandchildren thought John hung the moon and are immensely sad at the loss of such a wonderful grandpa. John was a sharp business man and a strong advocate for his community. He owned and operated Muskogee Overhead Door Company until 1992. He became branch manager of Rocket Freight Lines after having worked there as a driver for three years. He was a store manager for McAdams Pipe and Supply in Muskogee and worked as a construction engineer for ODOT. Perhaps the business he was most proud of was Ogden Insurance Agency in Muskogee, which he was owner and agent for from January 1976 to 2024. John served in a multitude of leadership roles to represent his community, such as: American Farmers and Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union vice president and director on the Executive Board from 1978-88 and 2001-2011, executive director of the Muskogee County Community Action Foundation, member of the Governor's Task Force for Small Business, a board member of Women in Safe Homes (W.I.S.H), past president of Teamsters Union Local 516, and a deacon of the Assembly of God church. John was a man with vision who was willing to take action to make a positive difference. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his in-laws Russell and Hazel Parker; his sister Sandra Kaye Smalley; daughter-in-law Stephanie (Breashears) Ogden; brother-in-law Rev. Leo Guthrie; sister-in-law Carolyn (Bowden) Ogden; nephew Bart Guthrie; niece Amy Ogden;John is survived by his wife, Joann of Oktaha; son Doug and Brenda Ogden of Oktaha; daughter Marla and Rocky Mosley of Oktaha; his grandsons Jace and Grace Ogden of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Rocky Joe Mosley of Indiana, Daniel and Jennifer Mosley of Broken Arrow; granddaughters Rachel and Trea Milne of Oktaha, and Caroline Lacie and Mike Herring of Port Lavaca, Texas; Great grandchildren Jack and Amelia Ogden; Cinch Morris; Aiden, Logan, Adriel, McKynlee, and Brody Mosley; Addilyn and Jaxon Milne; brother Jim and Debbie of Oktaha; sister Edith Guthrie of Stigler; and countless beloved friends, family, and friends that were like family.Services will be held 10AM, Friday, August 2, 2024 at First Assembly of God in Muskogee, Oklahoma and internment at Middleton Chapel Cemetery in Oktaha, Oklahoma. Pallbearers are Jace Ogden, Ross Ogden, Trea Milne, Dustin Ogden, Robert Ogden and Weston Hill. Honorary pallbearers are Doug Ogden, Rocky Mosley, Ken Ogden, Roy and Bill Duvall, Grady Reeves, Steve, Mike, and Gerald Ogden, and Mike Herring. Preparation of John's final resting place will be provided by Matt Muskrat. Funeral services are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home, 1830 N York St Muskogee, OK 74403. <![CDATA[The Muskogee Phoenix: All Categories]]> (12)

Upright bass player Jack Hannah died the first week of August 2023 in Muskogee OK, his hometown. Born September 15, 1944 to Geraldine "Jerry" (Bates) Hannah and John T. Hannah, his earliest memory is walking around the house singing Slim Gaillard's 'Cement Mixer (Put-Ti-Put-Ti)' accompanying himself on snare drum. As a young child Jack organized neighborhood parades and in 1955 played shortstop on the state championship Pee Wee team alongside his younger brother Joe and two cousins. Jack studied piano from 1st through 6th grade and added coronet in 5th grade, catching heat for jazzing up the national anthem. At the age of ten Jack was gigging on trumpet with Charlie Procter, and in his father's Dixieland Band (John played baritone sax). By junior high he had a good record collection and was frequenting the Rubiot in Tulsa. Jack switched to double bass in high school, playing jobs with Chick Rains, Ivory Starr, and musicians from the Black high school.Inspired by his mentor John Rigney, Jack enlisted in the Navy in 1963. He often visited the Bohemian Caverns and the Showboat Lounge during his year at the Naval School of Music. While stationed on the USS Springfield, the Admiral's ship based in Nice France, he played a wide variety of music in diverse settings and doubled on tuba. Seeing Dragonetti's bass on leave in Italy made a lasting impression. Jack and Denny Seiwell played with Booker Ervin and Pony Poindexter in Barcelona, in Nice they played with Barney Wilen.Jack met Carol Neal on the way to Navy music school. They married in 1966, and less than a year later moved to Texas, where he was in North Texas State's One O'Clock Lab Band at a time when the standup was being challenged by the electric. The night their son Al was born in Los Angeles 1971, Jack was so excited that he arrived at Willie Bobo's gig without his bass. He lived in L.A. three times: '68-73; '83-87; '89-94. Jack also had stretches in New York City, Kansas City, Tulsa and Milwaukee, where he met his second wife Debra Lemonds. Both marriages ended amicably. While living in San Diego, Jack studied in L.A. with Bob Stone. After moving to Los Angeles, he begged Nat Gangursky to take him on even though Nat was not accepting new students. Nat's lessons focused on the instrument and technique using Hrabe and Simandl. At the time, Jack was the principal bassist for the Hollywood Youth Symphony in addition to playing jazz dates. Years later, out of the blue he phoned Nat, for whom he had great respect and affection. Nat's wife Bea had just come from the hospital where Nat died. That night in NYC, Jack ran into Mingus and broke the news to him.Jack learned jazz on the bandstand. His playing was sensitive, with precise intonation. Physically animated, Jack could drive a big band and burn with the best, but he also dug slow ballads and playing free. His vibrato was relaxed and his double stops satisfying. Drummers loved him for his time, yet he effortlessly accommodated Mose Allison's rubato. Jack greatly enjoyed playing with Mose (1973-1976), was filmed with him ('Soundstage' in Chicago, 'In Performance' at Wolf Trap) and is the bass player on 'Your Mind Is On Vacation.' Some of the well-known people Jack played with include Horace Silver, Art Pepper (at Synanon), Eddie Harris, Slim Gaillard, Tete Montoliu, Tex Beneke, Lin Halliday, Larry Coryell, and Chet Baker in a stint that began mid-set when his bass player got lost and walked out. Jack's chart has three stelliums bunched together holding all but one of its planets in the sixth house: Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Sun, Neptune, Mars and Venus. Jack bought a pocket trumpet in 1993 and sounded pretty good on it after 35 years. He liked word play and often wrote numbered lists of favorite writers, painters, philosophers, actors, cities, composers, tunes, players (etc): "LaFaro, Haden, Carter, Chambers, Peaco*ck, Stinson" and Swallow. He had a phenomenal memory, was gregarious, affable and always willing to converse about music or politics. He didn't sleep much and liked his place uncluttered. Jack used a French bow for scales and arco. He played a 1921 Morelli, purchased from David "Buck" Wheat, which bears the label 'Handmade Reproduction Antonius Stradivarius 1721.' Its big warm sound can be heard on 'Jack Hannah Concert Jazz Trio' with Bob Summers and Nick Martinis. It includes 'Stella by Starlight' and ends with an exquisite solo performance of 'Lonely Woman.' Jack's ashes are buried in Fort Gibson National Cemetery, near the home of his beloved maternal grandparents, Carl and Winifred (Hurd) Bates. Jack is survived by son Albert Neal Hannah of Chicago IL, brother Joe (Margie) Hannah of Muskogee OK, and former wives Carol (Neal) Hannah of Rice Lake WI, and Debra D. Lemonds of East Pasadena CA.
