Do high performance spark plug wires make a difference? ›

Quality performance spark plug wires have two main objectives: simply transmitting the spark energy to the plugs and suppressing the voltage interference. If the plug wire's resistance is too high, the spark energy to the spark plug will decrease, causing poor performance and potential spark plug fouling.

The most obvious sign of faulty spark plug wires is your vehicle just feels a little 'off. ' It would probably start slowly with reduced gas mileage but could progress to no acceleration. Size is perhaps the last thing to consider when it comes to spark plug wires. Most manufacturers recommend an 8 or 8.5mm plug wire on most applications. Exceptions would be an all-out race car or a street rod where EMI/RFI suppression is not a concern, but weight and appearance are.

Serviceable Spark Plug Resistance

To help assure reliable and trouble free operations, Tempest recommends replacing spark plugs in service having a resistance value of more than 5000 ohms (5k ohms) or less than 500 (0.5k ohms). For new plugs, we recommend 4000 ohms as the maximum acceptable value.
